Can you do SEO without a website?

Updated November 2026.

Short answer: yes, a little. You can appear in local and map results and on directory pages without owning a website. But most searches show websites, and without one there is nothing of yours for those results to rank.

What you can do without a website

1. Google Business Profile

A free Google Business Profile is the single biggest step. It can show in Google Maps and the local results for searches like "plumber near me". Fill in every field, choose accurate categories, add photos, post updates and ask happy customers for reviews.

2. Bing Places and Apple Business Connect

Google is not the only map. Bing Places feeds Bing and Microsoft search, and Apple Business Connect controls how you appear in Apple Maps and Siri on iPhones. Both are free; claim them with the same details as your Google profile.

3. Directory listings

Listings on sites such as Yell, Checkatrade, Trustpilot or industry directories can rank on their own and help Google trust your business details. Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere.

4. Social profiles

Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages can rank for your business name. They help people who search for you directly, but rarely rank for general service searches.

5. Marketplaces

Etsy, Amazon or eBay listings can be found in search, but the traffic belongs to the platform and you play by their rules and fees.

Where it stops

  • You can only rank for what those platforms let you publish.
  • You cannot target the questions customers ask before they are ready to buy.
  • You do not own the audience, the data or the layout.
  • Analytics are limited, so it is hard to know what is working.
  • AI search tools such as Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT draw on pages they can read. Without your own pages, they describe you from whatever third-party listings say.
  • Your Google profile has no website link, and searches that show no map pack go to directories or competitors.

The cheapest useful next step

A simple, fast site with a page for each service and area you cover gives search engines something to rank and gives your Google profile somewhere to send people. That does not have to be expensive: our small business websites start at £400 +VAT on WordPress. If you already have one, see our SEO services.
